We Must Protect Childcare Services
April 29, 2009
Quality, affordable childcare is one of the most critical challenges facing working parents. All the current research shows that early childhood education affects later success, and that after school programming prevents violence. City government should be leading the way towards a comprehensive strategy for children and families, not walking away from the table.
As some of you may know, a recent shift in City policy will jeopardize the funding for ten pre-school and day care workers at community centers in neighborhoods across Boston.
Today, I am introducing a resolution with Councilor John Tobin that will call on the City to restore full funding for these jobs.
As a parent of two school-aged children, I know how important access to childcare can be for families. And I believe it is wrong to take away or privatize programs that – for many families – are the only affordable option for their children.
If we are going to tackle the challenges facing our young people – at school and in the neighborhoods – then we must remain committed to preschool and after school programs in Boston’s community centers.
