BOSTON. City councilor and mayoral candidate Sam Yoon wants the city to use its vehicle fleet less and share it more.

The city’s various departments currently have their own vehicles. But at today’s council meeting, Yoon will propose the city move to a vehicle-sharing system similar to one implemented by Washington, D.C. The service – called FastFleet and offered by Cambridge-based Zipcar – involves retrofitting vehicles with new technology and GPS equipment. City employees would sign out vehicles electronically on a need basis.

Yoon said 871 of the city’s 1,125 vehicles would be eligible to be consolidated at a savings $1 million for every 100 cars removed. He added the savings could also help the city switch more cars to hybrid or electric vehicles.

“This is an initiative that will save money, it will make sure our vehicles are used more efficiently and it will save the environment,” Yoon said yesterday.
