Yoon Raises Record Haul for August
Campaign Breaks Previous Highs for Dollars and Donors

September 2, 2009

BOSTON – City Councilor at Large and mayoral candidate Sam Yoon broke his campaign’s fundraising record in the month of August for both amount raised and number of donors, according to totals released today.

Yoon raised nearly $95,000 from over 700 donors in August. Yoon finished the month raising more money than rival Michael Flaherty, whose campaign took in $61,000 in August. The totals continue the fundraising trends of the last three months. Since June, Yoon’s monthly total raised has consistently risen while Flaherty’s and Mayor Thomas Menino’s have fallen.

“There is a growing sense that we are building momentum and that this race is within reach,” said Yoon campaign finance director, Frank Woodruff. “People who were skeptical about giving to Yoon at first are now believers, and they are telling their friends and family about the campaign.”

The Yoon campaign has operated on a leaner budget than its rivals. Yoon has spent only $275,000 this year, far less than Flaherty’s $630,000 and Menino’s $900,000.

Yoon campaign strategist Jim Spencer said that the Yoon’s ability to use resources efficiently reflects the candidate’s fiscal management skills.

“Winning this race has never been about having the most money, but about having enough money to get Sam’s message out,” said Spencer. “We have gotten to this point because Sam has spent money wisely and has been able to drum up enthusiasm around his campaign.”
