Yoon To Be Recognized by Phillips Brooks House
Harvard Nonprofit Honors City Councilor with “Advocate Award”

April 28, 2009

BOSTON – City Councilor at Large and mayoral candidate Sam Yoon will receive the “Summer Urban Program Advocate Award” tonight from the Phillips Brooks House Association (PBHA), Harvard University’s student-led nonprofit.

“Sam Yoon has stood up for young people on the City Council, and it’s time we recognize his many contributions,” said Gene Corbin, Executive Director of the PBHA. “We have great respect for the many ways he has supported and advocated for vital youth programs in our community.”

Yoon said he is deeply honored by the award.

“Youth programs need strong advocates in all sectors – public, private, and non-profit,” said Yoon. “It’s a tremendous honor to receive this award, but there is still much work to be done.”

Yoon has fought for increased funding for youth programs throughout his time on the City Council. In his first year, he organized hundreds of students to gather in City Hall during a Council vote to voice support for youth program funding. He has pushed for additional funding in each subsequent year.

Founded in 1904, the PBHA is a student-led nonprofit at Harvard College that engages approximately 1,600 students in 79 social service and social change programs. One of the organization’s largest projects is the Summer Urban Program, which runs summer activities for over 900 children and youth, primarily from housing developments, throughout Boston and Cambridge.
